Lantern Light and Line of Sight

Cody "Soulcrypt"1 min read

We rebuilt Gravemarch's lighting from the wick outward. Every shadow now has a reason to be there.

Light is the only mercy in Gravemarch. It is also the loudest thing you carry. This month we tore out the old lighting rig and rebuilt it around a single premise: if the player can see it, something else can see the player.

One flame, many consequences

The lantern is now a physical object in the simulation. It swings. It gutters in draughts. Douse it and the catacombs go honest — you navigate by memory, by the drip of water, by the dry scrape of something patient in the dark.

We stopped asking how the level should look. We asked what the dead would allow you to see.

Line of sight for enemies reads the same light volume the player does. No cheating, no invisible detection cones. The result is a stealth language you can learn by looking rather than by memorising rules.
